The screwups you're talking about, added up over the _entire Internet_, are on the scale of thousands of packets per second. Split the same screwup level across all of the Internet's ISPs and the load becomes unnoticeable. Furthermore, even the most extreme DNS loads are miniscule compared to HTTP load. Root-server load is special, because it has a serious (and unnecessary) centralization problem; ISP-cache load isn't, and doesn't. Do you think ISPs say to themselves ``Wow, our expenses are totally out of control; it must be because of all those customers dropping responses from our DNS caches''? ---D. J.
