Subject: Merging RRP and Whois

Hello, All.

I have recently posted the information below to the Whois list.

The RRP group has made quite a bit of progress on a generic
protocol for Registry-Registrar communication.

It would save a lot of duplicated effort if the Whois and RRP
protocols could be merged into a single standard. Registries,
Registrars, and end users would then have to contend with a single
protocol, instead of two diverging ones.

At the most fundamental level, both Whois and RRP provide a view into
the the repository of information associated with a domain name. A
sufficiently rich protocol would allow for these views to be finely
adjusted. In addition, it would be possible for other views to
emerge, as necessity dictates.

Implementation effort, number of bugs, testing and troubleshooting
should all be positively affected by having only a single protocol to
deal with. This would surely benefit everyone.

George.
