SOAP's shortcomings are well know ..but the inescapable fact is its there, 
there are an increasingly number of tools available and its well supported 
by a variety of entities that use SOAP to exchange data.

At a sufficient level of abstraction the PROVREG is a industry specific 
(domain names) form of EDI. The question is then how do these entities 
...registries and registrars communicate?

EPP in and of itself if fine ..but is it the last answer in transport?  I 
dont think so.

IMHO the direction to take is to standardize the data elements ( XML 
Schemas etc) necessary for registrars and registries to AAA and exchange 
data but also support a number of transport mechanisms.

Now some of us might have preferred BEEP here..but no one wants to re fight 
that battle.
