I support this middle ground.

In terms of what is used commonly in practice - it will depend on the
application.
I am sure that the new registries will seek to differentiate their services
from the dominant ".com" registry, and new applications/services will
emerge.   Lets not limit the protocol to support the current dominate
registry service, but leave flexibility to build new services without
re-engineering the protocol.
